Towards the end of the last century, the initiative of a dreamer, supported by musicians and enthusiasts and backed by an institution, was the seed that germinated and became the luxuriant tree of Cuban jazz.
I was among those who witnessed the birth of JoJazz as a necessary adventure for the development and consolidation of a musical dimension which, in Cuba, has been synonymous with talent, genius, expertise and global recognition despite its lack of any formal structure.
This spontaneous movement of exponents of a genre - that today is universal - did not have visibility of its own or a course that channeled the creative cravings of students and youth who had music as a goal in life.
As an activist in the diffusion of and dedication to the subject, beyond roles and missions, I was summoned to be a member of a jury by pioneer promoter Alexis Vázquez years before spaces for Cuban jazz talent were opened. At that time, Vázquez was director of the National Center for Popular Music.
